“Do the best you can until you know better.

Then when you know better, do better.”

-Maya Angelou

Many times I find myself lost in thought, possibly lost in remorse or regret or both.  I question myself as to why I acted certain ways, as to why I made certain choices, why I said certain things, or why I didn’t say certain things, why I changed or why I didn’t.  I ponder about what would have happened if only, if only I would have been different, done different, said different, I ponder on the phenomenal outcome I would have had when I change the variable in my imagination.

But Maya Angelou couldn’t have said it better, therapists agree with her and say the same thing.  I did the best I could back then, I didn’t know better.  Now although I still have sooooooo much room to grow and improve and learn, now I know at least a little better.  Now its up to me to do better.  However in order do to better I must forgive myself for things I cannot change, because that is a fact, I cannot change the past, nor would that be healthy.

Now when my mind starts to wonder, I pull out Maya’s words and I wrap them around me like a security blanket.  A fluffily blanket knit of truthful words which soothes me, it allows me to breathe and relax.  My blanket helps me remember I only did the best I could, such is learning, such is life.  Beautiful. Intense. Hopeful. Imperfect. Forgiving.

Day (384) – Reflecting on the Past

I can’t really add many comments other than that reading this is truly inspiring. Something I think that many of us trying to be better can connect to.

The Better Man Project

In my last year,

I tried to hide, I cried, and told myself to stand aside,

I learned patience and understanding in a project of better-manning,

I prayed and I wrote, I swallowed my throat,

My voice became silent, my pen into retirement,

I gained and I lost,

I cried in exhaust,

I looked for inspiration, in a place of devastation,

I was rocked by something I thought was locked,

Nothing is ever locked, it is only cocked,

I found it in myself to get back my health,

I lifted, I ran, tripped, and started again,

I felt pain and heartbreak, looking at that lake,

It was certain for me, as I saw my hands shake,

Picked myself up and tried to breathe,

Looking for something deep inside of me,

That little spark that kept me alive,

Came knocking and finally arrived,

I chose to live, without the fear,

To…

I will be the gladdest thing
Under the sun!
I will touch a hundred flowers
And not pick one.
I will look at cliffs and clouds
With quiet eyes,
Watch the wind bow down the grass,
And the grass rise.

And when lights begin to show
Up from the town,
I will mark which must be mine,
And then start down.

It’s hard to keep writing without knowing if anyone is reading.

But as I write I pretend that my words touch the heart of many others.

I pretend my will to push through will help others push also.

After all thats what is hard; to keep pushing when it feels like there is no more strength left in our body.

As I reflect on my weakness I find that that’s exactly where my strength lies, in my weakness and in my fears

So if you have fears, or lack of energy but huge dreams like me…..push through!!!

On that note I will share todays homily in a readers digest version.  Such was inspired on the visit the three wise men made to baby Jesus.  The kings visited the manor led by a star, led by something beyond explanation.  The kings followed a star, they put energy in making a trip into the desert following a star, they packed the best gifts they could offer and at the end were able to see what they hoped for deep in their hearts.  The kings were able to see God on earth as man, the trip and risks they made had been rewarded.  After visiting the baby, our prince, our savior, they  left back to where they came from taking another road, for they had been instructed in a dream to return through another path.

To me that alone was a beautiful reminder that stars lead to dreams, that we will be rewarded for the journey we make if we offer the best we have.  The homily was of similar inspiration it reminded everyone that there are important points in life we should try to remember. Having a new year to live our lives it can be helpful to keep them in mind so I will share them with you.

1) Be alert, be ready

2) Get moving, take the trip, it starts with today and it starts with the first step

3) expect resistance, when we start we take action is when we notice the resistance in others and in ourselves

4) Offer the best you have, not the second best

5) When we find God, when we are in touch with our higher power our path will  not remain the same

“People are often unreasonable and self-centered. Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.
If you are honest people may cheat you. Be honest anyway.
If you find happiness, people may be jealous. Be happy anyway.
The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough.
Give your best anyway.”

Its hard to picture forever after, when “I do” has already turned into a disaster

Its hard to picture winning when the taste of sin is winning

Its hard to believe your heart can heal when all you feel is pain and sorrow

But join me, come with me, hold my hand, share your voice, your tears, your joys

Together we can learn how to love ourselves again

Love comes from within and everything is possible
